A federal judge Monday refused to let former Detroit Riverfront Conservancy Chief Financial Officer William Smith stay out of prison longer and ordered him to surrender Tuesday to start serving a federal sentence for one of the largest heists in modern Detroit history.
U.S. District Judge Susan DeClercq refused Smith's request to extend his self-surrender date "for a reasonable period of time" so he can receive and recover from an unspecified medical treatment.
The judge noted Smith, 52, originally was supposed to report to prison June 12 but received a 60-day extension to receive medical treatment.
"He received such medical treatment," the judge wrote. "And he admits that the additional treatment he seeks 'might possibly be available,'" in the Bureau of Prisons. "Indeed, the government
