JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — Volunteers cleaned up parts of Johnstown on Monday in an effort to further their mission of beautifying the city.
The clean-up event was hosted by Rev. Sylvia King. Volunteers started as early as 9 a.m. and gathered at the Christ Centered Community Church on Somerset Street to get supplies.
They started at a vacant lot at the end of Somerset Street, where they found piles of trash.
"Apparently, according to the city workers who are here today helping us out with this, this happens a lot. People don't want to pay for their trash, so they decide that they're just going to find a vacant lot and get rid of it. So we've found things like drywall, mattresses, wood, I mean, all kinds of junk. Household, you know, stuff," Rob Forcey, a volunteer, said.
