Student identification badges are a new safety measure for Roanoke City Public Schools starting this academic year on Aug. 19.
Some students were issued IDs in years past, and now the safety initiative is expanding to all students, from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, an announcement said on the school division’s website.
“Students who use school transportation will scan their ID when entering and exiting the bus,” the announcement said. “This will ensure that students board the right bus and will allow parents/guardians to track their student’s bus.”
The student IDs are also used to check out library materials, mark attendance, log into computer programs, pick up lunch, check in with the nurse, enter school-sponsored events and receive a discounted fare of 85 cents on V
