TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The Texas Senate has unanimously passed a bill aimed at protecting Texas deeds.

Governor Abbott vetoed the original legislation, saying its new verification process had too many steps, especially for low income steps.

“There was some concerns it would slow things down, provide too much information,” said Trey Bates the Vice President of Governmental Affairs for Texas Realtors.

The new bill requires those making property transactions to present identification at the county clerk’s office, where Bates says most fraud cases happen.

“Now we have to do that,” said Gregg County Clerk Michelle Giley. “And we will keep that for later use if need be.”

Previously, offices could ask for an ID if they had an electronic recording system.
