A perfect summer day at Durrance Lake nearly turned tragic on Sunday, until strangers leapt into action to save a life.
Nick Banks was relaxing on a floating dock in the middle of the lake, within Mount Work Regional Park, when he heard commotion near shore.
“People were pointing and standing up to see what was going on,” he says.
Banks noticed a man struggling to keep his head above water, bobbing up and down on the surface and calling for help. “Someone was able to get him a pool noodle, which was good enough to get him to safety,” he says.
For a moment, it seemed disaster had been averted, but bystanders realized another person was missing.
“It became clear that there was still somebody missing, and that person was under the water, and we didn’t know where he was,” Banks said.
