WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Monday he is invoking provisions of the District’s Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal jurisdiction.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said Attorney General Pam Bondi will “take command” of MPD and named Terry Cole as interim federal commissioner of police. The president framed the move as a response to “rising crime” in the city, despite MPD and FBI data showing crime is down overall, and promised more federal law enforcement on D.C. streets.
“When you walk down the street, you’re gonna see police or you’re gonna see FBI agents, we’re gonna have a lot of agents on the streets,” Trump said.
