The number of children on Education, Health and Care plans (EHCP) has more than doubled in five years, according to figures revealed by Coventry City Council. The plans are usually assigned to SEND (special educational need and disabilities) pupils.

The council's EHCP guide for parents says these plans are implemented when a SEND child's educational setting is "not enabling the child or young person to make adequate progress". The council's website states: "An Education, Health and Care Plan is a legal document which describes your child's difficulties and the special help that is needed to meet those difficulties."

As of December 2020 there were 1,637 children aged 4 - 18 across Coventry's state funded schools with an active EHCP plan. A further 136 were under assessment. The figure h
