SEATTLE, Wash. – Attorney General Nick Brown has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, accusing it of illegally withholding more than $9 million in congressionally authorized funds meant to protect Washington from climate change impacts.

Brown highlighted the increasing frequency and severity of Washington's heatwaves, wildfires, droughts and floods due to the changing climate. He also pointed to slower but significant changes such as sea level rise, ocean acidification and loss of mountain snowpack.

Congress established two programs in 2022 and 2023 to assist states in preparing for climate change effects. However, the lawsuit claims that in May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration abruptly and unlawfully terminated both awards. The reason given was that the
