After being rejected by the Mount Clemens Planning Commission, the leaders of a proposed shelter for homeless men say they are preparing to fight back in court and at the ballot box.

Planning commissioners last week voted against the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team (MCREST)’s proposal to convert a former real estate office on Main Street and Robertson into a 24-bed men’s homeless shelter.

Now MCREST officials are mulling over their options.

John Johnson, board president of the non-profit, said he initially was optimistic about receiving approval, given the city’s previous acceptance of similar shelters and services for the unhoused. But he found that wasn’t the case when commissioners rejected the proposal.
