A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) is set to be laucnhed after a Clydebank man who killed his own son died while in custody.

Edward Simpson, 55, a prisoner at HMP Castle Huntly in Perthshire, died at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee on March 18, 2022, after contracting Covid-19 at the open jail.

Simpson was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow in 2002 after being found guilty of the brutal murder of his 18-year-old son, also named Edward, in November 2001.

In the hearing at Dundee Sheriff Court, the inquiry will also look into the death of John Ian Reid, 63, who had been incarcerated at HMP Glenochil and died on July 30, 2021, in Forth Valley Royal Hospital near Falkirk.

Preliminary hearings will be held on August 29 at Dundee Sheriff Court.
