An incident involving an aerial object shot down over two First Nations’ traditional territories in the Yukon in February 2023 highlights a critical failure in communications and the systemic exclusion of First Nation governments, according to a new report on national defence and Arctic security.

At the time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to social media to announce he ordered the take down of an unidentified object that had violated Canadian airspace and Premier Ranj Pillai subsequently told the public via a statement that the object posed no risk to Yukoners' safety. That event involved more than 130 Canadian military members mobilizing in the hunt for the object downed by the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, in the remote area between Dawson City and Mayo.
