BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — Nearly two months after the political assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Emeritus Melissa Hortman, voters in her home district will take the first step in deciding her successor.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday with three candidates on the DFL side vying to represent their party in the Sept. 16 special election to fill the seat of Hortman, who was fatally shot on June 14, along with her husband Mark. Vance Boelter is charged with murder and attempted murder at both the state and federal levels in the killings of the Hortmans and the wounding of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.
