Natural England has launched a new dive survey to monitor the kelp forests around Falmouth, which play a vital role in supporting marine biodiversity.

The study was last carried out in 2012 and will require a dive team to survey underwater sites, collecting data on kelp cover, species diversity and overall habitat condition.

But what are kelp forests and why are they so important?

Kelp is the name given to several species of large brown seaweed which helps to indicate a healthy marine habitat. Kelp forests are a key feature of the shallow, rocky reefs around our region's coasts, where sunlight can reach the seabed.

They provide shelter, food and nursery grounds for a wide range of marine species including seals, fish, crustaceans and mollusc
