MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) - An advisory against swimming was posted at two swimming sites of the same sound.
Marine Fisheries has announced the swimming advisories for Sunset Drive and 16th Street public access points to the Bogue Sound in Morehead City. The advisories were activated because bacteria levels exceeded state water standards.
According to the release, elevated levels of enterococci could increase the risk of developing gastrointestinal illnesses or skin infections in people or pets.
The decision was made after five samples were taken over a 30-day period.
Marine Fisheries says that Bogue Sound itself will not be closing, but signs will be posted for the advised areas.
State officials will continue testing and will remove the signs when the levels have decreased.
