BESSEMER CITY, N.C. — A man is dead after a reported assault in Bessemer City, according to Gaston County Police .

Officers said they were called to a home along New Moon Lane just before 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. They found Michael Hughes, 74, dead from injuries inflicted during an assault.

Derek Hughes, 41, was arrested after a search. He is charged with murder and is being held with no bond in Gaston County jail.

Police did not confirm if the victim and suspect were related.

The department said the investigation is still ongoing and additional details could be released as they become available.
