KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — The Idaho Panhandle Health District (PHD) is reporting the first confirmed measles case in the region in more than 30 years.

PHD says the infection was found in an unvaccinated child in Kootenai County. This is the first case in a resident of Idaho since 2023 and the first case in the northern Panhandle since 1991. PHD says it is working to identify how the individual contracted measles and contacting the known locations that the individual visited while infectious to inform anyone who may have been exposed to the virus.

Panhandle Health will now conduct contact tracing, starting by interviewing the patient’s family and working out in a web of possible exposures, says the state epidemiologist Dr. Christine Hahn with the state’s Department of Health.
