GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The city of Grand Rapids is considering changes to its existing noise ordinance in response to complaints about excessive noise levels from protests near women’s medical facilities.

Philip Strom, the city’s deputy city attorney, requested guidance at the city’s committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 12, about exploring the feasibility of implementing a buffer distance from medical facilities where amplified noise would be prohibited.

The committee agreed to move forward with exploring the change without specifying a timeline of bringing it back to the commission for a vote.

The complaints were centered around the use of loudspeakers and megaphones at demonstrations in public places near the Heritage Clinic for Women and Planned Parenthood on Cherry Street in
