The Yukon softball community assembled its first fast-pitch squad for the Canada Summer Games on a historic note, marking the first time the territory has fielded a team since territorial championships began in the 1980s.

Softball Yukon shifted gears six years ago, pivoting from its slow-pitch roots to also offering fast pitch, the format played at the Canada Games, by focusing on youth development and building a foundation for competitive growth across the territory, said Softball Yukon director Sarah Walz.

“Years and years ago, fast pitch was kind of gaining in the territory, I’m told, and then it just kind of fizzled out. So we’ve just been working on rebuilding that,” Walz said.
