Police in a coastal Maine town issued a warning to beachgoers on Tuesday after they received reports of what appeared to be a large great white shark near some of the state's most popular beaches.
Scarborough's marine resource officer received a report of the approximately 10- to 12-foot shark on Monday, police said. The shark was seen swimming in the area of Crescent Beach State Park, Higgins Beach and Pine Point Beach, they said.
The department also used social media to circulate drone footage of the big fish. Commercial clam fisherman David Lancaster of Scarborough shot the drone footage of the shark and said seeing it was “magnificent,” if a little surprising.
“It was pretty crazy to see in the local waters. There are some really amazing creatures in the sea,” Lancaster said. “It's in the back of your head, but you have to accept it.”
