Eric Sweeney, the teenager accused of killing his sister-in-law and two nephews at their Northfield home in 2022, plans to plead guilty to second-degree murder charges even though no plea deal has been reached.

The charges appear to have been reduced from first-degree to second-degree murder, according to court documents.

Sweeney, who is now 19, filed notice Tuesday that he intends to plead guilty to three counts of second-degree murder after he allegedly killed his sister-in-law Kassandra Sweeney, 25, and nephews, Benjamin, 4, and Mason, 1, on Aug. 3, 2022.

The plea hearing will take place at 9 a.m. Friday in Merrimack County Superior Court. Sweeney has agreed to proceed with what is known as a naked plea, meaning he can argue for a lighter sentence and appeal the sentence handed down
