Folks elected to Grimsby council next year will be getting a substantial pay raise over the current group of councillors.

Councillors voted 7-2 on Monday to approve a remuneration and expense policy review that will boost councillors base salaries by nearly 23 per cent and the mayor’s base salary by 11.5 per cent, starting with the next term of council.

Councillors also voted 6-3 to approve an annual health care spending account of $1,000 for each council member, starting in 2027.

“The base pay rates for mayor and council positions are both low,” said Marianne Love, the consultant hired to prepare the review.

The new pay arrangement will see the mayor’s salary rise to $58,741 annually from $52,650 and councillors’ pay jump to $29,216 from $23,775.
