The Consumer Price Index in July rose 2.7% year-over-year, and so did grocery prices, which have gotten more expensive compared to the previous year.

This index measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for consumer goods and services. Advertisement

The food index rose 2.9% in the past year up to July, according to the latest report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics .

This is driven by a 0.7% increase in the index for dairy and related products over the past month, which saw a 1.9% increase in milk.

The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs also rose 0.2% in July as the beef index saw a 1.5% increase.
