Two women were rescued on Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on Aug. 8 after strong winds pushed them miles from shore, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Around 3:30 p.m., dispatchers received a report of two paddleboarders in distress on the lake, near Ontonagon, according to a DNR news release. Officers launched from the Ontonagon Village Marina aboard an Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office patrol boat to get to the women.

The women — a 29-year-old from Minnesota and a 37-year-old from Illinois, both originally from the Ontonagon area — were about a mile offshore, officials said.

By the time officers reached them around 4:08 p.m., winds had pushed them about two miles out, said conservation officer Ethen Mapes, who was alerted and responded to the scene
