ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - An Orangeburg County man has been sentenced to prison in the September 2021 shooting death of his estranged wife.

Richard Amous, 55, of Santee, was sentenced by the Honorable Scott Sprouse to 19 years in prison after pleading guilty but mentally ill to voluntary manslaughter on Aug. 7, according to a press release from the First Circuit Solicitor’s office.

The victim, 48-year-old Freyana Amous, was at her home with three children on Sept. 15, 2021, when Amous arrived uninvited. A verbal argument took place between Amous and Freyana, and Amous then pointed a handgun at Freyana. The handgun discharged and struck her once in her forehead.

Amous fled the scene and left the children inside the home. One child ran to a nearby home for help.
