GILBERT, Ariz. — A woman is dead after a shooting at a west Gilbert extended stay hotel, the city's police department said.

Gilbert police responded to multiple 911 calls regarding a shooting on Tuesday evening at the InTown Suites Extended Stay. The hotel is a place on the west side of Gilbert that police “are aware of,” and there have been calls for service to the location, police said during a news briefing.

Police later told 12News that the suspect had retreated and barricaded himself in one of the rooms. Officers established communication with the suspect for about 30 minutes before he surrendered himself to police.

Additional officers were able to reach the person who was shot, a middle-aged woman, and render aid.

The woman was taken to the hospital, but later died.
