CONCORD, N.H. —

The ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is questioning how much progress can be made toward peace at an upcoming summit in Alaska between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I am disappointed that the president has reversed his rhetoric again around Russia and Ukraine. He seems to be willing to give Vladimir Putin a pass," said Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.

Shaheen said she does not believe Putin should be allowed on U.S. soil.

"I don't think we should reward Vladimir Putin's unprovoked war by allowing him to be invited to the United States," she said.

Ahead of the one-on-one meeting, the Trump administration is trying to manage expectations.
