KENTUCKY (WEVV) — Kentucky has initiated a new measure to prevent deadly crashes in work zones by introducing automated speed enforcement in construction areas.
According to the Kentucky Department of Transportation, the state recorded 1,223 work zone crashes in 2024, resulting in 298 injuries and seven deaths.
“Unfortunately, one of the realities for Kentucky highways are there are a lot of state workers killed and hurt every year in accidents that are completely avoidable,” Daviess County Sheriff Brad Youngman said.
House Bill 664, also known as the Jared Lee Helton Act, has established a pilot program for automated speed enforcement in Kentucky highway work zones. This allows peace officers to issue civil citations based on images from speed-detection devices when certain conditions
