WASHINGTON — Just one day after President Donald Trump announced a federal takeover of policing in Washington, D.C., and the deployment of the National Guard, their growing presence across the District is causing unease, especially among youth and local residents.
National Guard vehicles and personnel have been spotted in several neighborhoods, including Navy Yard. While intended to increase security, the increased military presence has sparked concern about how it will affect day-to-day life in the city.
“Everybody is expected to follow the law, and the police are expected to police in a constitutional way, whether they are local police or federal police,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said during a community conversation Tuesday.
