One day after President Donald Trump announced he was again postponing a tariff increase on Chinese imports , the U.S. bicycle industry is working to counteract what is effectively a roughly 30% tax on everything it brings in from Asia.
That includes complete bicycles and their component parts as well as helmets, bags and shoes, almost all of which come from China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Cambodia.
“If the tariffs hammer the countries that produce these parts, you just can’t onshore this stuff overnight. It’s going to take a while,” Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., told Spectrum News.
An avid cyclist, Thompson chairs the bipartisan Congressional Bike Caucus and is also a sponsor of the U.S. Bicycle Production and Assembly Act introduced in June.
The bill’s goal is to increase American bicyc
