GASTON CO., N.C. – Gaston County Schools will welcome about 30,000 students back to the classroom on Wednesday. 750 of them will be walking on to a brand-new campus.

W.P. Grier Middle School replaces the old one built in the 1950s. District officials say it cost $56 million to build.

Another change this year: all students will have to walk through metal detectors when entering the building.
