BESSEMER CITY, N.C. – Gaston County Police have made an arrest after a murder in Bessemer City. It happened on the 100 block of New Moon Lane. Police say they found a man dead on Tuesday following an assault around 8:30 AM.

Police have arrested 41-year-old Derek Hughes after they say he killed 74-year-old Michael Hughes. He is charged with first degree murder. The victim is believed to be the suspect’s father.

Now, Derek Hughes is being held behind bars at the Gaston County Jail without bond. He was just released from prison less than a week ago.
