After her son died, State Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) was sorting through some of the things that her son left behind, besides a whole lot of broken hearts, and came across a letter that he had written when he was 9-years-old.
It was written in cursive.
“I want to be a police officer so I can be part of the law and do good for people,” he wrote, adding he knew in order to achieve his goal he’d have to get an education and proper training, showing his determination to do whatever was needed to achieve his goal.
“I’m going to be a police officer for my whole life,” he said in his letter.
While Carter’s son, Bryan Burgess, never wore a policeman’s uniform his determination to do good never wavered and he went on to lead a life of service as a member of the United States Army.
