PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Two people were taken to the hospital after being rescued off South Mountain when they became overheated Tuesday night.

Phoenix and Tempe firefighters responded to South Mountain around 8 p.m. after two male hikers reported they were overheated, got lost and could not continue their descent down the mountain.

Rescue teams went up the trail and found both hikers about 1 mile from the trailhead, according to Phoenix Fire.

The men were reportedly hiking since 4 p.m. before getting overheated and lost.

Phoenix Fire used a helicopter rescue operation to hoist the hikers off the mountain. Both men were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

There were no injuries to firefighters during this rescue operation.
