An investigation into a shooting Tuesday afternoon propmpted the closure of state Highway 84 near Newark for a bit, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The case was still under investigation, but just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers were sent to a two-vehicle crash on eastbound Highway 84 west of Interstate 880.

A witness reported hearing a gunshot after the crash and a local hospital contacted the CHP to say that a person had entered their facility with a gunshot wound to their arm. CHP investigators believe the person was the victim of the shooting.

Eastbound Highway 84 was shut down at 6:30 p.m. so detectives could hunt for evidence, the CHP said. All lanes were cleared and reopened by 8:30 p.m.
