The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is returning to Michigan ahead of the busy Labor Day travel period, with officials citing data that shows late summer is one of the deadliest times of year for impaired-driving crashes.

According to an Aug. 13 news release from the Michigan State Police, from 2019 to 2023, there were 44 driver fatalities during Labor Day holiday weekends in Michigan, and 43.2% of the drivers killed were under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

In 2023, the state recorded 1,021 fatal crashes, with 272 (26.6%) involving alcohol and 230 (22.5%) involving drugs. That year, there were 8,817 alcohol-involved crashes resulting in 297 deaths — 27.1% of all traffic fatalities — and 2,250
