When U.S. Vice President JD Vance made an August visit to the Cotswolds, a rural area of Southwestern England, for a vacation, U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy — a member of the Labour government — said he was "delighted" to host the American VP and members of his family. But not everyone in that part of England welcomed the visit.

Residents of the small Cotswolds hamlet of Dean, according to the Wall Street Journal, complained that members of the U.S. Secret Service were knocking on their doors, asking to verify their identities, and even questioning them about their social media posts.

Steve Akers, deputy mayor of Chipping Norton, England, told the Journal, "We've had a curtailment of our freedoms here, just by his mere presence, in terms of where we can walk and where we can be. And the American Secret Service knocking on people's doors and asking about their Facebook profiles."

Oxfordshire-based folk-rock singer Dolly Mavies, according to the BBC, even refused to perform at a concert when she found out that Vance was attending.

On Instagram, Mavies (whose real name is Molly Davies) posted, "So not being fans of his, we decided that wasn't for us and we packed up our stuff and left. Because morals are more important than money."

In an official statement, Mavies said, "For me, performing is about connection, authenticity, and integrity."

According to BBC reports Stephen Stafford and Galya Dimitrova, "(Vance) is now reported to be staying in a house close to Diddly Squat, the farm and pub belonging to broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson…. American residents of the Cotswolds include TV chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, who said she fled to the area specifically to escape President Donald Trump. Dean resident Jonathan Mazower said locals found out about the visit from police, who had gathered their details."
