The mayor of Harbour Grace says a tip led to the recovery of the town’s Amelia Earhart statue, brazenly stolen back in April.

Don Coombs says someone called him last week, inquiring as to whether or not the $50,000 reward for the statue’s return was still being offered.

The information provided led police to recover the aviation pioneer’s bronze likeness in a wooded area near Heart’s Content last Friday.

Coombs says he couldn’t be happier to have the statue back, even if she is cut into several big pieces.

The cuts are clean according to Coombs and he’s in conversation with sculptors Luben Boykov and Morgan McDonald to see how she can be restored to her former glory.

The statue will remain with the RCMP as the investigation continues, however, Coombs says they’re hoping she’ll be back
