A video released Wednesday by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office shows a Vancouver man appear to fumble for a gun in the moments before a deputy fatally shot him July 30 in Uptown Village Vancouver .

Branden Michael Whitcomb , 36, of Vancouver died of gunshot wounds to the head, neck and torso, according to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Washington State Office of Independent Investigations identified Deputy Michael Gonzalez as the deputy who shot Whitcomb. Gonzalez has been with the sheriff’s office since 2021 and works patrol as a K-9 handler. He was placed on critical incident leave, according to the sheriff’s office, which is standard protocol.
