VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach lifeguards saved nearly 200 people from the ocean waters this weekend, according to a social media post from the Virginia Beach Lifeguards Association.

Strong rip currents caused dangerous conditions for Virginia Beach and North Carolina swimmers this weekend. Across three beaches, lifeguards completed 100 rescues, saving a total of 180 beach-goers.

"Thank you to all of our guards for their dedication to keeping the public safe, and as always, SWIM NEAR A LIFEGUARD!!!," the post stated.

Gary Felch, Deputy Chief of the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service, told 13News Now that this was the most water rescues made in a single weekend so far this summer, including busy holiday weekends.
