Like another reader, I was disturbed by a recent letter that concluded that “armed citizens are our best defense.” As one response to that noted correctly, states with strict gun laws have less gun violence.
Additionally, it should be noted that owning a gun may actually put people in your home at greater risk of being killed by gunfire. This was the result of a study published by David Studdert, a professor of Law and of Health Policy at Stanford University, based on research from 2004-2016.
Another fact to keep in mind is that gunfire is the No. 1 cause of death of children. Most of these atrocities are the result of reckless gun storage within a home. Arming citizens is not the path to a safer America.
