KAMIAH, Idaho — An Idaho wildland firefighter who suffered a severe traumatic brain injury while fighting a fire last August is making steady progress on his recovery journey, says his family.
Almost exactly 1 year ago, on Saturday, August 10, 2024, U.S. Forest Service firefighter Justin Shaw was struck by a tree during initial attack operations on the Coffee Can Saddle fire on the Salmon River Ranger District.
In May 2025, Shaw underwent three cranioplasties and was continuing therapy in Omaha, Nebraska. His family says they are now working to update their home in Idaho so that Justin will be able to live more independently when he can return.
