Whitlock played Hammond organ, sang backing vocals, and had a hand in writing seven songs on “Layla,” the lone studio release by the band, led by guitar god Eric Clapton.

Whitlock sang lead vocals on “Thorn Tree in the Garden,” the acoustic song that closes “Layla,” an album known for its epic title track, with lyrics about Clapton’s love for fashion model Pattie Boyd, wife of Clapton’s best friend, Beatles guitarist George Harrison.
