Donald Trump announced today that several hundred members of the Washington, D.C. National Guard will be deployed to the nation’s capital in what he called a “full liberation” of the city. The move marks one of the most aggressive federal interventions in the city in recent years and comes as senior White House advisors compare Washington, D.C. to “war-torn countries.”

Trump also declared that the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia will be placed under federal control, shifting command authority away from local officials. The White House framed the move as necessary to address what it described as “out-of-control crime” and “lawlessness” in the capital.

As part of the operation, 120 FBI agents from the Washington Field Office will be reassigned to nighttime patrol
