A 61-year-old man died after a large wave knocked him over and swept him into the waters of Lake Superior.

On Tuesday, deputies from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office were called to the area of 4840 West Highway 61 near Lutsen, and arrived to see a body floating in the lake approximately 100 feet from shore.

First responders from Cook County Search and Rescue launched a boat in nearby Tofte, but had to turn back because of the rough waters.

At the same time, U.S. Border Patrol launched a boat from Grand Marais, and were able to locate and recover the man’s body.

Investigators later learned the man and a woman were sitting on shores of the lake when the woman decided to go back to their cabin.
