A 1960s-era car recently discovered in the Mississippi River could be connected to a decades-old missing persons case.

On Sunday, a fisherman was using a sonar finder while out on the Mississippi River near County Road 1 in Sartell. The man thought he spotted a car in the river on his device and contacted authorities.

Deputies with the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol Unit responded to the scene, and later organized a dive team search of the area with Benton County.

On Wednesday morning, the dive team discovered a 1960s-era car on the bottom of the river, halfway full of sediment. A tow company was called in to help get the car out of the water, but as of this afternoon it remained submerged.
