JACKSON, MI — The mayor of Jackson is asking the community to share the picture of the man suspected of killing his niece.

“We can’t take that back, what happened, but what we can do is we can get justice,” Mayor Daniel Mahoney, said in a Facebook Live posted Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Mia Sims, 18, was fatally shot July 27 in the 1500 block of Carl Breeding Way, a few blocks from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and East High Street in south Jackson, police said.

Sims, Mahoney’s niece, had been volunteering in the children’s ministry at United Peoples Community Church. She went to retrieve a breakfast made by her grandmother from her car when she was hit by the gunfire, Mahoney said.
