DENVER (KDVR) -- Seasonal dog on-leash requirements for several open space trails in the city of Boulder will go into effect Friday.
The city said Wednesday that the on-leash requirements will be in place to try and help minimize disturbances in "sensitive" bear habitats.
"City-managed open space and natural areas provide important habitat for black bears," the city said in a release. "The dog leash requirement is intended to minimize dog-bear encounters where high-quality bear foraging habitat is near trails."
The on-leash requirements are timed to coincide with when bears begin to eat large amounts of food in open space, in order to gain enough weight to last them through winter hibernation, the city said.
