LANSING, Mich. — Twin bills in the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives aim to put new age-restriction hurdles on digital devices to block minors from accessing explicit adult content.

The bipartisan legislation was introduced by Republican State Rep. Brad Paquette (R-Niles) and Democratic State Sen. John Cherry (D-Flint) in House Bill 4429 and Senate Bill 284 .

The two identical bills aim to implement a device-based age verification system to prevent children from accessing adult content online.

The legislation puts requirements on manufacturers — when "commercially reasonable and technically feasible" — to determine or estimate a user's age when a device is first activated by the user. That age will then be used as a digital signal that the device will send to any applicat
