KENTWOOD, Mich. — One local food bank is starting a new donation effort to make up for food supply lost as a result of cuts in federal support.
Feeding America West Michigan gathers and distributes food to those in need across West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. It says that it’s losing $2.2 million worth of its food supply over the next couple of months because of federal funding cuts.
“Part of the issue is we were planning on that food. That food was committed and scheduled,” said Ken Estelle, president and CEO of Feeding America West Michigan.
The organization launched its Bridge the Gap donation drive on Thursday with a goal of $1.5 million, already receiving one $300,000 matching donation from an anonymous donor.
