BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Burlington’s urban park rangers are charged with maintaining order in public spaces in the state with the fourth-highest homelessness rate in the country.

The number of unhoused people in Vermont tripled during the pandemic and hasn’t budged since, even though the state has dedicated hundreds of millions of dollars to the problem. Burlington and other small cities are bearing the brunt of the problem.

Darren Perron spoke with Seven Days’ Derek Brouwer, who reported on the rangers’ difficult mission in this week’s issue.
